The Artists’ Kitchen
Customizing Your Forever Home

While recent design trends have kitchen remodeling projects looking a little “predictable” and standard, we’re all in favor of customizing your “forever” home to your own needs and desires. So this month, we’ll showcase a home where the owners expressed their artistry and love of design in their new kitchen addition.
The homeowner initially stated that her kitchen was “nice”; she liked it, but it was not big enough. Besides her deep love of cooking, she is passionate about art and expressing creativity. So, because it is their forever home, she was excited to see her vision of her dream kitchen come to life. Scroll down for the link to our guided video tour!
This project involved the design of a large kitchen addition; the whole addition was twice the size of the original kitchen. It contains the new kitchen plus a new small entry. Let’s peek inside!

The Center of Attention, The Hub of the Home
Their dream was for this to not be “just the kitchen” – the goal was for this room to be the hub of family activity – cooking, entertaining, conversations and displaying beautiful art. The resulting new kitchen is light and bright and airy, with cathedral ceilings and skylights and a large window wall that looks out into their beautifully landscaped yard. From the kitchen you can see the adjacent rooms and follow your gaze out the windows of those rooms.

The Kitchen, Before

The Kitchen, After
While the all-white kitchen trend is popular in some homes, this room bursts with colors, patterns, textures and materials placed together with thoughtful love, harmony and beauty. The homeowner chose each of the materials and designs following her artistic insights. While she knew what she liked, we helped her put all these pieces together like a rich tapestry.

The kitchen features high end wood-grained cabinetry and blue wood-look tile flooring in a herringbone pattern. The backsplash is what we affectionately describe as “funky” blue glass tile. Her double Wolf stoves (did we mention she loves to cook?) sit side by side in front of a tile mural backsplash.

Besides seating at the new island, the kitchen welcomes family and guests to sit and dine at a large Stickley table with chairs, and matching stools for the island.
As you might expect for art-lovers, this is no ordinary kitchen. The entire room serves as an art gallery. There is framed artwork beautifully displayed everywhere. An artist herself, some pieces are hers and others are part of their collection. The many colors and textures in the materials as well as natural plants arranged throughout the space, make the whole room feel like a work of art. To top it all off, there’s sparkly light fixtures to add bling.
The New Entry Way

The homeowners train therapy dogs, so in this new addition, we added a small enclosed front entry with glass block.
Converting the existing front door into a Dutch door where the upper half can open separate from the lower half, provided a calming space where the dogs can get ready to greet visitors.

We mentioned a lovely landscaped exterior – where you can see new windows and walkways.
Standing at the kitchen sink, you can look out the window at the front yard which looks and feels like a beautifully designed park.

In this house, the homeowners had a general idea of what they wanted, what their budget allowed, and gave themselves permission to have everything they’ve always wanted in a home. It’s both comforting and exciting to make a house truly yours and we enjoy making that kind of magic with our clients.
