Say Goodbye To Your Home with Love & Honor

Are you having a hard time parting with your first, or childhood home, when it really is time to move on and say goodbye?

Some folks are reticent to sell the large family house even when there’s no need to keep and maintain a large home any more. When our own childhood home sold recently, we felt the full impact of the emotion behind saying goodbye. You may remember that we featured our house in past campaigns, and how the whole family pitched in to make it special. And now that it sold, we gave it a proper sendoff by creating a simple video tour of the whole house and grounds – just for our own family, especially for those living out of state now.

If you find it difficult to face the fact that it’s time to sell the family house, it’s a great help to let it go with pride and make your own video tour, to keep that piece of history in the family. If we get emotional about letting it go, we can always watch the video and “walk through” the house one more time.

A question we’re asked often is how to prepare to sell the old family home “do we fix it up … or do we sell as is”?

Our family decided that fixing it up to some extent would help honor the family legacy. If we hadn’t fixed it up we would not have been able to show it with pride. This way, we could be gratified to show our childhood home, while helping with the resale value, and saying goodbye. It is interesting to note that fixing it up allowed us to become more emotionally ready to let it go.

What Does “Fixing It Up” Entail?

This doesn’t mean we spend tens of thousands on new kitchens and bathrooms. Stick to the basics and let the new homeowners decide what they want to do beyond that, to make it theirs.

Here’s What To Spend Your Time and Money On

• Rip out old carpeting
• Paint all the walls
• Refinish the hard wood floors unless they’re in excellent shape.
• Hire a professional company to deep clean it
• Stage it – leave it looking like “a magazine cover”.

When it comes to considering to go further than this on updates, you’ll want to assess the current condition: Is it in disrepair or just old-fashioned? If the “updates” are for style and cosmetics, then you could skip it, as you can’t predict the new buyer’s preferred style. And quite frankly you can’t get 100% of your investment back. What is in disrepair must be fixed to uphold the true value of the home.

If it’s time to let go of your old family home, please know that we fully appreciate how emotional it all is and we would be honored to help you through the process. Do take photos of favorite spots and video a little tour you can share with the extended family. “Make it look nice” like you know mom would have liked to leave it, to pay tribute to your family and what the house meant to all of you.
