It’s Still Summer

In NJ sometimes we go weeks without really seeing our yards, buried under all that snow in the deep winter. So, when spring and summer finally arrive, we relish our time outside.

Now that we’ve dipped our toes into August, we can enjoy the outside of our properties well into the coming fall. It gets you thinking…

What are your wishes and dreams for the outside of your home? A porch to read in? A patio to enjoy coffee after dinner? A deck descending to your yard or pool?

While we help families fall in love with their indoor living spaces, we enjoy building fun outdoor spaces as well.

Take a peek at some outdoor projects we love. We hope they inspire you to enjoy every inch of your home and property!

What You See Is What You Get:
The Accuracy of Our Drawings

Zimmerman Architects Denville NJ provide accurate renderings of the project

As Architects, the most important thing to us is that you LOVE your completed project and that it is everything you dreamed it would be.

One of the ways we do this by making sure that you fully understand it, so that when you approve the design, you know what it is you are approving and can really see it in your mind’s eye.

In fact, we had a client who told us incredulously, “I went out in the back yard and looked at the finished addition… It looks exactly like your drawings!” So now we make sure all of our clients know this to be true. Read More→

I Love My House

When is the last time YOU came home and said with pride, “I LOVE my house!” ?

Never? Well, we’re going to tell you the story of a homeowner who called on us to create the transformation of a lifetime for her house. Like many others, the owner purchased the house as their “starter home”, admitting it was not the most attractive – but it fit into their budget at the time.

During their Design Consultation, they stated their goal was not just to “fix” the issues they found in the design and functionality, they also finally wanted to be proud of their house and show it off to guests.

In fact, the changes we designed for their home were so dramatic, that we can’t feature them all in one campaign – so we’ll present the exterior renovations here, and unveil the interior improvements in Part 2, next week!

For the exterior of the house, we kept to the same basic style, but added better detailing, re-configuring the roof lines, which made a dramatic difference. Read More→

The House With a Lake View

The House With a Lake View

There once was a simple house with a spectacular view of the lake across from their property. Looking out from the front of the house, the owners enjoyed a beautiful, unobstructed view of the lake.

So what’s the problem? When they entertained guests or simply relaxed on their own, they used their deck – in back of the house – with no possible view of the gorgeous lake.

We also spotted another problem – with only a minimal roof overhang, the owners would get soaked in the rain while unlocking their door. Even worse, with no protection at the front door, visitors would be waiting in the rain while the home owners came to let them in. And, let’s face it, the design of their house was quite simple and plain.

During our Design Consultation, we listened to their concerns and goals. The owner felt that having a porch would solve these challenges, and so he had originally set about designing the porch on his own. But, he wasn’t completely sure how to go about it, and wasn’t confident that he knew how to make it look really great. Knowing that he wanted it done in the best possible manner, he called on us to design it instead.

What’s Hanging Over Your Head Can Make a Huge Impact

What’s Hanging Over Your Head Can Make a Huge Impact

Have you ever looked up and noticed how much your roof “sticks out” beyond the exterior wall of your house? Probably not. And if you have noticed, we’re willing to bet you haven’t thought about how hugely important this little piece of design can be.

A roof overhang is more aesthetically pleasing – it gives the house more character and increases the value of the house. A better built home adds more curb appeal, and that increases the resale value.

Before recommended roof extensions

Here’s the before picture, the house without a roof overhang.

It’s good building practice to have your roof go further out than the edge of your wall by at least 9 inches, but 12 or more is better. This Roof Overhang protects the walls and windows of the outside of your house from damaging water issues.

Without that overhang, water can come into your house, around your windows. The water may come in at the top of the wall if there’s no overhang. When a roof lays flush with the wall, if your gutters get backed up, there is no protection.

Before recommended roof overhang extensions Without a proper roof overhang, water creeps inside the walls or inside the house. Water inside your walls spells a heap of trouble, because it will cause mold. Mold isn’t always visible on the sheet rock, but hopefully you can sense its odor. However, there have been cases where the mold went undetected – and you don’t know you have this problem until you become ill and don’t know why you feel sick.
